Open Beta Draft Tournament Report

Hello Fellow Spoils Players! Daniel Sotelo here with a little run down of the Free Open Beta Draft event that was held at Campus Cards and Games in Orlando Florida on Saturday March 7th. I have seen on Facebook how much the Florida Scene has grown with the Spoils over the past year or so with the help of some great Ambassadors (GREAT JOB GUYS!!) and I guess Ken helped out, too!  After meeting a few of them at Gen Con 2014, I knew I wanted to get down there one day and play some Spoils. I was planning a trip down to Orlando that weekend for the first ever NYCFC match VS the other MLS Expansion Team, Orlando City. So I took that as perfect opportunity to get in touch with John Westcott and Ken Pilcher to help set up an event. After talking back and forth for a bit, I wanted to have an event that will attract players from all the different groups in different regions of Florida. So…I thought, why not put up some product that I had laying around and do a FREE Draft. Who wouldn’t want to play in a FREE SPOILS DRAFT? The Forgotten Five: Arcanist

The Forgotten Five: Arcanist

Like any card game, The Spoils has cards that go out of favor, are rarely used, or simply forgotten as newer editions come into play. Outside of those formats you will rarely ever see some cards in play, which is a shame and possibly a mistake as players overlook their true value. Over the next five articles I’m going to look at five forgotten cards from each trade and explain why I think they should or could be included in a competitive deck. A couple of ground rules before I get started: none of the cards will be rare, none from Seed 2: Gloamspike’s Revenge, Seed 3: Fall of Marmothoa, or Shade of the Devoured Emperor, and I’ll try to include at least one tactic, item, or location. Finding five forgotten Arcanist cards was more difficult than I imagined with my self-imposed restriction of not choosing rare cards or cards from the last three sets. Arcanist has some of the most interesting tactics in the game and there are very few that I haven’t seen commonly used. With the local advent of token based decks, that eliminated other cards that, up until recently, hadn’t seen much use. My focus turned toward characters, especially those who had more than one life, so they could hopefully survive cards like Watchtower or Spry Archer. I also tried to factor in recent changes brought into play with Shade and re-looked at some of the older cards that...
