Rare Drafting: Heist Edition

Rare Drafting: Heist Edition

Greetings fellow Spoilers! So as of this reading I have no doubt that most of you have called in sick, locked the doors, and told loved ones to stick it where they would have things stuck because April 10th, my friends, was Holy Heist day.  I, myself, have told my significant other that while I love her, I’m not in Spoils love with her, and even though now it seems like that was a mistake I believe we will look back on this time not as a roadblock in our relationship, but rather the building of the strong foundation that our marriage rests upon.  Plus, I’m sure all will be forgiven when I speak incessantly on the new combos I’ve discovered, but I digress. I want to talk again today about the moment when the planets align and the rare card in the pack is worth drafting on its own merits.  In the previous article, I mentioned cards that could or should direct your drafting following that pack, cards like GGG or Samuel Gristwalter.  But forget those tired Shade and 2nd Edition card; it’s Heist time. The one thing I noticed, and you will too, is that MANY of the rare cards in Heist are very good and worth grabbing.  The bummer being is that they are costed appropriately (I know, right) or they have a high threshold, meaning they will direct your draft, locking you into pulling cards from the same trade in order to best make use of your target threshold – not unlike the previously mentioned cards.  There are, however, three rare cards that I believe...
Spoiler! The Primitive Tribes of Thabbash Faction

Spoiler! The Primitive Tribes of Thabbash Faction

“Hampus, what faction should I use?” “The Tournament Faction of course. It is a lot better than the ones from Seed.” “What about the new one from Holy Heist?” “Wait what? Is there a new faction? Show me, now!” For the first time let me present to you, the second new faction card from Holy Heist: The Primitive Tribes of Thabbash Faction cards are what makes The Spoils so awesome. It’s the card that lets you use your resources to draw cards or play more resources and it is also the card type with the most potential for innovation in future sets. Let’s start by comparing this card to the Tournament Faction. First off, you will start with 1 less influence, but that won’t make a huge difference in the majority of your games. You will draw the same amount of cards in the start of the game and you will have the same basic rules as on the Tournament Faction. The first major difference is that you will start with one face-down resource (obsession in this case) and only one face up resource. This means that you will be one threshold “behind” and as I see it you have 3 options with your resources: Play mono (only cards from one color). This will be the most consistent as it will hit high threshold faster than the next two options and you can play a lower amount of resources. Start with the face-down obsession and one other staple resource (your splash color) and then only play one kind of resource into your deck. This is also consistent but you won’t...
Spoiler! Uhluhtc Niudla

Spoiler! Uhluhtc Niudla

I must confess: I’m a Griefer.  I’m that annoying player who loves to mess with people.  I enjoy the salty taste of my opponent’s tears of anguish.  Some of my favourite cards to play are things that counter my opponent’s cards, force them to discard cards from their hand, or – best of all – screw with the opponent’s resources.  There’s nothing better than watching my opponent writhe with frustration because they can’t play all the cool cards in their hand. Spastic tendencies When I first started playing The Spoils I was surprised at the lack of resource destruction effects, but of course there’s a good reason for it: give Griefers like me too much power and nobody will have any fun.  That didn’t stop me though.  Back in the First Edition days I started building decks around Spastic Tentacles, because it was the only way to get the opponent’s resources off the board.  I tried heaps of different ways of abusing the Tentacles, mostly by bouncing them back to my hand and re-playing them, while ramping up my own resources as much as possible.  To maintain my resource advantage in the face of repeated Spastic Tentacles recursion I tried Research Assistants and Makeshift Contrivances at first, and then with the release of Seed 2 I switched to the Arcane Research ramp engine, which was a massive upgrade.  (If you’re unfamiliar with the Arcane Research engine, it means using Arcane Research to find 4 Manifests, Hidden Ruins, Burly Assailments, or Accidental Inventions, and then using those to get a big early resource boost.)  For a kill condition I used...
Top 10 Shade Cards Pt. 2

Top 10 Shade Cards Pt. 2

As promised, I am back with the second half of my Top 10 Shade Cards for Constructed list. If you read Part One then you know what this is all about, so I’m going to dive right in to Part Two. Neuralyzer Agent As a 3/3/3 for five resources and two threshold, the Agent is a tad expensive when just considering his stats.  Thankfully, this card isn’t blank and has some great Rules Text, namely the trigger that causes the opponent to discard a card whenever this guy is declared as an attacker. I love this because it is a discard effect you can generate that your opponent cannot respond to. Players can often circumvent having to discard a card by either drawing more cards or laying the card down as a resource in response. The Agent doesn’t afford that opportunity since you can’t respond to triggers. If you manage to hit six threshold then this card increases in value. Not only will it make your opponent ditch a card any time it attacks, but it could potentially make them ditch another if this card breaks through to the Faction. Combine the Agent with some Arcanist Covert trickery and you could have a good way to control the opponent’s hand size. Homewrecker I’m sad to say that I didn’t think too much of this card when I first saw it, but now that I have seen it in action it terrifies me. This card hits play as a 3/3/3 for either five resources or two resources and two damage to a location you control. At five resources this card...
Spoiler! Ignatius Gloamspike

Spoiler! Ignatius Gloamspike

Greetings fellow Spoilers! Today is an exciting day.  I was given the opportunity to spoil a new card from the upcoming Holy Heist set.  That card, ladies and gentlemen, is… Ignatius Gloamspike! Since we play The Spoils I refuse to look at anything other than the art and flavor first.  So let’s.  This here is a Gloamspike!  That must be exciting for you all.  I know I’m excited.  For those of you that need a brief primer in The Spoils history, let me sort of explain. Way back when, (Seed cycle) the main Arcanist dude was Woadenworm Gloamspike.  You might remember him from his own card in Seed 2, as well as the picture in the background on Ignatius’ card.  See it!? See it there!? Exciting!  Okay.  So, Woadenworm was an advisor to Emperor Padamose and high priest of the Thabbashites.  Basically, he mutinied against everyone, sired the Demon Knights and took a run at Marduun.  That did not go well.  His demon children were defeated and he was exiled to Lugubria.  It’s hard to argue things went well for Padamose though, since he was betrayed six ways to Sunday.  I think the only person that came out on top might have been Elzibeth, but that’s not important here. Anyway, Woadenworm gets sent to Lugubria.  There he fathers the Brothers Gloamspike: Mogdra, Mirgla, and Dogwald.  These brothers discover voidal humor, Mogdra dies of voidal poisoning, Mirgla gets all sad and reclusive, and Dogwald becomes rich and famous.  Dogwald, one of the most powerful Arcanists around, has several children and one of them is… Ignatius!   Ignatius is not all...
Open Beta Draft Tournament Report

Open Beta Draft Tournament Report

Hello Fellow Spoils Players! Daniel Sotelo here with a little run down of the Free Open Beta Draft event that was held at Campus Cards and Games in Orlando Florida on Saturday March 7th. I have seen on Facebook how much the Florida Scene has grown with the Spoils over the past year or so with the help of some great Ambassadors (GREAT JOB GUYS!!) and I guess Ken helped out, too!  After meeting a few of them at Gen Con 2014, I knew I wanted to get down there one day and play some Spoils. I was planning a trip down to Orlando that weekend for the first ever NYCFC match VS the other MLS Expansion Team, Orlando City. So I took that as perfect opportunity to get in touch with John Westcott and Ken Pilcher to help set up an event. After talking back and forth for a bit, I wanted to have an event that will attract players from all the different groups in different regions of Florida. So…I thought, why not put up some product that I had laying around and do a FREE Draft. Who wouldn’t want to play in a FREE SPOILS DRAFT? To add a bit of flare to the event, I chose to make it Open Beta, bringing back Spoils to its roots and for a lot of the these Florida Players, they had never played with Open Beta before. This was a chance to get some cool Beta cards for FREE and play in a fun event!  With the hard work from John, who set everything up at the shop, we had a...

Organized Play – July Announcement

Organized Play – July Announcement

Hello Everyone, This announcement is running just a little bit behind schedule with all the great things we have going on here with The Spoils. Gen Con is just around the corner and we at The Spoils USA couldn’t be more excited for the Seed Saga sneak peek! We can’t wait to see everyone’s reaction to the new cards. Thursday’s sealed event will actually be six packs of Seed Saga so be sure to sign up. Speaking of signing up, if you are planning on going to Gen Con, please be sure to register for all your Spoils events now if you can. Given the fact that we have at least $500 in prizes for each headline event and nearly $1000 in Worlds, we are expecting a larger turnout this year. The only way we can obtain additional space for an event is by selling out of tickets prior to the convention which starts on July 30th, so again, please register for your events now so we can be sure to accommodate everyone who wants to play. Note: Please be sure to check the slider on our mainpage for Gen Con and be advised of any restrictions or requirements for the events. Wrapping Up Season Three and Starting Season Four Per the last Organized Play announcement, Season 4 started as of July 1st. Be on the lookout for an announcement in the near future regarding any possible changes to Organized Play. The points for Season 3 have been tabulated and can be seen here. Advice to an Ambassador pt. 3

Advice to an Ambassador pt. 3

This is part three of a three part series. Find part one here and part two here. Six – If Knowledge is power… then a god am I !!! (Or people are Lazy).  Okay this one, I admit, can be a little tricky and is very dependent on your situation on the ground, but the key thing to wining any campaign id information and in this case having it to hand. When it comes down to it people are; busy, distracted, unsure and do not have the time to (insert task), or as I like to call it lazy. Instead of deriding them for this obvious moral failing (tongue firmly placed in cheek) help them to over come their inherent lack of moral fibre and have information to hand. I guess my point is, make it as easy as possible for people to get into the game, the more barriers you can drop, the less excuse they can have to not play it. So what information do you need? Well the truth is dependent on who you are speaking to, so lets deal with shops first (which is the trickiest and I have to say I have an unfair advantage here). Stores; Remember at the heart of any store, there is a need to make a profit, which means people through the door and product that can be sold. So, if you can give a lot of information to the store owner so they don’t have to dig for themselves this will help. Therefore knowing the following is very useful; Who is the distributor for the game in the...

Victors Circuit Dallas Winner Report

Victors Circuit Dallas Winner Report

Hi, my name is Alex Muhich. I’ve been playing card games since 2006 and have been a tournament official for a few games since 2011. I had heard of The Spoils from Dragon Shield sleeve boxes and more recently from the event held at the ARG Championships in Florida, but didn’t know anything about it. I had been given a brief description of what it’s like, but had never sat down and played until I had some free time between rounds at Force of Will AGP Dallas 2016.
