To The Spoils Community,
For the last seven years, I have had the pleasure to publish this wonderful game and be a part of our incredible community. When I acquired The Spoils in 2009, I wanted to continue producing the game because I always believed it deserved the chance to break out. I believed that if we could show it to enough people, the game was so great that it would stand on its own! And I thought it would be a lot of fun.
Over the last several years, I have been proud of the work our team has done. We produced more sets, hosted more tournaments, had more players playing, more Ambassadors ambassadoring, more articles written and more cards in players’ hands then ever before. We showed it to thousands upon thousands of people, all with an eye toward producing an even more ambitious slate of products in the coming year.
But showing it to all those people unfortunately didn’t prove to be enough. So, with a heavy heart, I have decided that it is time to officially bring the Rescue Mission to an end.
December 2016 will be the last month that The Spoils is in full operation. As of January 1st 2017, after a full decade of delighting fans the world over, production and official Organized Play for The Spoils Card Game will cease.
Everyone involved in The Spoils behind the scenes from the beginning to the end did the very best they could with the limited resources available. Nobody wanted this result. Nobody came to work every day with this in mind. And I want to stress that I am grateful for everyone that put their heart and soul into this adventure. Alas, now is the end of the road and the end of the saga.
The Spoils leaves behind a legacy of fantastic gameplay, an Origins Fan Favorite Award, and a final product in the form of the Decade of Deckadence box that was thought of by some as “the most exciting thing happening in trading card games.” I am proud of all of this. I am proud, too, of the team we put together and the war they waged in what was always going to be an uphill battle. A battle we looked in the eye, not fearing to enter into; even with the odds against us.
But mostly, I am proud of the legacy The Spoils has of fiercely loyal fans, a community of players and ambassadors and judges and retailers that has stuck it out with us through thick and thin over the last decade. For that, and so much more, I am proud.
My hope is that you do not let this stand in your way of enjoying The Spoils in the future, or color your past enjoyment of it. I hope players the world over will continue to play and compete with their friends. Older products will still be available for sale, so do keep playing and enjoy this fine game that rests in the hearts of so many of us.
I truly wish things could be different, but I also know that this is the way things must be moving forward. It was a very hard choice to make, but in the end it had to be done.
And so, in celebration of our favorite game, here are two of my favorite cards:
…and of course “Spoils Rescue Mission”; the greatest dream AND the greatest art piece of them all!
Maybe you can make a deck out of them, or just enjoy the flavor text.
In closing, I want to thank you all for coming along on this adventure with me and the many incredifantastiawesome members of the team; both past and present. Now the future awaits along with new great adventures for us all to delight in. Keep playing, keep living, keep dreaming!
